Béla Tarr’s International Masterclass for Filmmakers

Internationally acclaimed Hungarian director, Béla Tarr will hold a masterclass at Freeszfe in Budapest, Hungary in March 2024 (exact date to be announced later).

The official language of the masterclass is English.

We welcome applications from aspiring directors and cinematographers from all over the world to participate in a joint creative process under the mentorship of Béla Tarr.

During the two weeks of the masterclass participants have day to day meetings with Mr. Tarr and shoot a short film of their own on a given topic. Equipment, crew, location and actors are provided by the organizers of the masterclass.

The topic chosen by Mr. Tarr for the august masterclass: ”I’m Waiting for My Man”.

Rough schedule:

  • Discussion the projects of the attendees
  • Personal consultation
  • Preparations for shooting: costumes, set design, casting, location scouting etc.
  • Shooting – (1 shooting day for each participant)
  • Post-production (editing, sound-design, etc.)
  • Screening of the finished short films


Location: Nador utca 15, CEU Building, Budapest, Hungary

Requirements: submission of a short film, CV, motivational letter.

Applicants are selected by Mr. Tarr based on the submitted material.

Application deadline: 20 January

Course fee: 2000 EUR.

The fee covers the masterclass, accommodation, shooting budget, equipment, crew, actors, locations.

Travel expenses and living costs (food, fares etc.) are NOT included.
